Boston Public Schools Partnership

This summer, West End House was part of a citywide effort to support elementary students with summer learning opportunities designed to combat learning loss. Partnering with Boston After School & Beyond and Boston Public Schools (BPS), our Summer Learning Academy hosted 52 rising second and third graders—many of whom were new to the West End House. Five BPS certified teachers, including West End House alumni Kelly Cryts and Rayanna West, delivered small group learning activities in math and in reading each morning and afternoon. After their daily lessons, they joined our wide array of youth development activities including art, music, swimming, games, and plenty of time exploring Boston. We served scratch-made lunch every day and many of our youth participated in cooking classes. A hallmark of our program is how we intentionally address social and emotional well-being through check-ins and expressive arts and movement. Our young campers also had weekly field trips throughout Boston, exploring sites including the ICA, the Frog Pond and Tangerini farm.
