Although we were unable to host our traditional Halloween Family Night activities this year at the West End House, we could not let the holiday come and go without a few tricks and treats for our learning hub participants. Staff organized a week full of delightfully scary treats and crafts for our youth to feel the spooktacular joy of the holiday. Activities included a Halloween hat decorating contest, complete with a red carpet runway, creating Halloween character face masks, decorating mini pumpkins and of course there were some scrumptious treats too.
Youth in each learning hub crafted and decorated their own Halloween hat with materials provided from West End House. Everyone’s hat creations were then modeled by their maker, as West End House learning hub youth strutted down our physically distanced catwalk and showed off their amazing designs. Youth also created some fun and creative Halloween themed face masks. Characters included Dracula, ghosts, mummies, and spider webs. Individual mini pumpkins were also decorated with paint, glitter, googly eyes and markers.
On Friday, each learning hub decorated a Halloween themed cake. Each space received a cake with frosting and other items to decorate the cake. One person was in charge of decorating the cake for the group. Each room decided what they wanted their cake to look like and the decorator made their vision come to life. Finished cakes of pumpkins and spider webs became the snack for the hub that day.
The week of Halloween festivities also came to a close with a pajama/costume party on Friday. Learning hub members (including staff) were encouraged to wear their favorite or coolest onesies, pjs or even a costume of their choosing. Staff also passed out individually wrapped and separated bags of candy treats to each youth.
Halloween definitely looked and felt different this year, yet everyone kept a smile on their faces through it all. Our staff and members brought the spooky energy over the course of the whole week! A fun and memorable time was had by all.
