As part of our National Latinx and Hispanic Heritage Month celebration West End House staff created a Latinx Hispanic Heritage Hero display in honor of historical and local unsung Latinx and Hispanic heroes. Staff researched 14 Latinx and Hispanic individuals that sparked their interest, learning more about their lives and influences within the Latinx and Hispanic communities. They then created posters for each individual complete with a photo and information about their achievements and cultural impact on the Latinx and Hispanic communities. The display in honor of these historical and local unsung Latinx and Hispanic heroes can be found on our second floor landing.
Heroes include:
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – American politician and activist of Puerto Rican descent
Ramon Contreras – Afro-Latino political strategist and activist
Roberto Clemente – Puerto Rican baseball player
Frida Kahlo – Mexican painter
Pablo Alvarado – El Salvadorian activist and Executive Director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network
Indya Moore – American actor and model of Haitian, Dominican and Puerto-Rican descent
Rigoberta Menchu Tum – K’iche’ Guatemalan human rights activist, feminist, and Nobel Peace Prize laureate
Oscar Emilio León Somoza – Venezuelan musician best known for his work with salsa music
Óscar Isaac Hernández Estrada – Guatemalan-born American actor
Sonia Sotomayor – Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States of Puerto Rican descent
Edgardo Armando Franco – Panamanian former reggae artist
Al Horford – Dominican professional basketball player
Luis Lionel Andres (“Leo”) Messi – Argentinian soccer player
Juan Felipe Herrera – poet, performer, writer, cartoonist, teacher, and activist of Mexican descent
