Please join us as we count down to 2024 with inspiring stories from our West End House community. Read on to meet Joseph, a 9th grade student at Boston Green Academy.
Joseph participated in the Leadership, Exploration, Adventure Program (LEAP), an initiative led by Career Pathways Manger Tait Wade at the West End House. LEAP provides hands-on experiences that exposes students to various careers and invites them to explore fields and industries that they might not have otherwise known.
This summer, Joseph and his fellow LEAP peers visited Lab Central, a company supporting biotech and life sciences startups, where one of our alumni Jonathan Sanchez currently works. He was inspired by the people he met and the wealth of information they shared. This encounter deepened his love for science and added a new layer to his aspirations.
In Joseph’s own words:
“Visiting Lab Central this summer was eye-opening this summer. Big shoutout to Tait for making LEAP unforgettable! We dove into the ER scene and learned how to support trauma patients. It was intense, but so cool. We explored the biotech world, and even got the lowdown on running a business—things I’m super passionate about. I’m grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow!”
This fall, Joseph applied for and was selected as a Peer Leader, a year-round teen employment initiative managed by Carleen Colin, West End House’s Leadership and Career Development Manager. Joseph’s commitment to his work shines through as a Peer Leader in the Games Room, where he supports and mentors 8 to 10-year-olds. His motivation to contribute positively to his community is driven by the inspiration he draws from dedicated West End House staff.
