Education & TechnologyHelping our youth members achieve academic success is a key part of our mission here at the West End House. Our comprehensive education program focuses on homework help, tutoring, college preparation, career exploration, and enrichment activities. At the West End House, we offer year round programs to help our members prepare for the opportunity to go to college. Learning also takes place throughout the West End House - members learn chemistry and math in cooking classes, practice problem solving in the gym, develop critical thinking in the Music Clubhouse and much more. Here are some of the important programs in this core area: Homework Help & TutoringHomework assistance and tutoring is available every day to youth in the education center and in the middle school/teen study lounge. Volunteers and staff are here to help each member to realize their full academic potential, to help them complete homework assignments, and to offer additional tutoring. Educational EnrichmentEnrichment activities are educational and fun! Our youth members learn concepts in math, science, and literacy through fun activities like quiz bowl, educational games, science club, and more. Reading BuddiesIn this program, children read aloud to their adult volunteer Reading Buddy throughout the week and participate in a weekly fun activity centered on the week’s story. In addition, the RAVE-O reading intervention program targets second and third grade students who need extra help. College ClubWeekly programs are designed to help teens explore college options, learn about college life, and prepare for the experience. West End House staff take our high school members on college tours, help them prepare for the SATs, teach them to write strong college applications and help them to secure financial aid. Test PreparationWest End House staff and volunteers prepare members for success on the MCAS, ISSEE, PSAT, and SAT exams. Preparation is tailored to individual learning styles with large group, small group and one-on-one learning sessions available. |
